Five Leadership Drivers
The 5 leadership drivers
Effective leadership comprises myriad actions that can be distilled into key drivers for leaders' success and impact.
In my book The Focused Executive identify five leadership drivers:
1. Influencing
2. Synergising
3. Enabling
4. Energising
5. Trusting
These drivers are thoroughly explored in individual courses within The Focused Executive series.
Influencing
Influencing is about attaining superior results from individuals you have no direct control over. Yet their decisions affect the performance and development of the organisation.
This includes leading upwards and influencing the CEO, line manager, and board of directors. It also includes leading externally and influencing key customers, suppliers, and the community.
You can influence by selling ideas and assertively presenting yourself. Influencing also involves building a strong network of allies, both internal and external. Most leaders have to work with groups and present to audiences, which presents an excellent opportunity to influence individuals.
This driver is covered in the SMG course Mastering Influence for Driving Results.
Synergising
Synergising is about leading across the organisation. This integrates optimising the performance of both team and individual efforts. It involves combining different skills, efforts, and viewpoints in a team or organisation.
Essential to achieving synergy is the need for the leader to align team members with a common purpose, build trust, and promote shared accountability.
Synergistic teams tackle challenges by leveraging diverse skills and perspectives. This allows for creative problem-solving and innovative approaches. These teams seize opportunities by combining individual strengths and resources.
This driver is covered in the SMG course Building High Performance Teams.
Enabling
Enabling is about leading your team forward, empowering and their success. Enabling makes it possible for them to operate at their highest potential.
It incorporates painting a picture of success. Then, we create an environment where people are motivated to achieve.
In a practical sense, enabling involves mitigating the 'busy burden', when excessive workloads impede productivity. It also involves flexing one's leadership style to suit the person and situation. Coaching as an enabler strengthens performance and fosters growth.
This driver is covered in the SMG course Empowering Success.
Energising
Energising refers to the leaders motivating and inspiring the team to achieve their best.
The concept of energising in the workplace encompasses job fit. This includes job alignment, addressing atmospheric needs, talent management, and career development.
This driver is covered in the SMG course Energising Your Team for Peak Performance.
Trusting
Trusting in the context of leadership and organisations is the strategic fostering and leveraging of interpersonal, professional, and organisational trust.
